Interview with industry professional

Proof of project management software application

COMPONENTS

Scrum project management research, project management tool organization, practical Scrum project development, industry professional interview

THE PROJECT

Scrum Novice is a project surrounding the research and comprehension of the Agile framework "Scrum." The document covers the various components of the methodology, an example of its real-world application, a brief review of two project management tools, and in-depth takeaways on the nuances of operating with a Scrum framework.

THE GOAL

The goal of this project was to gain an understanding of the Scrum methodology and its accompanying purpose, roles, and application.

THE PROCESS

Identifying Skill Gaps

The project was initiated as a response to a series of analyses designed to identify patterns in my strengths an uncovers areas for improvement within my professional skill sets. As a Project Manager, these analyses revealed that a project focused on the Scrum framework of management was the most beneficial to strengthening my skill gap.

Learning from Experience

To assist in my learning, I also collaborated with the Ringling College of Art and Design Virtual Reality department to get practical, hands-on experience serving as a Scrum Master for three virtual reality experiences in development.

HARD SKILL NEEDS

  • Agile project management

  • Feedback-driven project experience

  • Collaboration with industry artists

  • Industry-related knowledge, tools, and processes

  • Project management applications and software

SOFT SKILL NEEDS

  • Leadership

  • Task optimization and prioritization

  • Deadline and time management

  • Big-picture understanding

  • Coordination and task delegation

Understanding the Basics

To learn Scrum, I conducted research into the Agile methodology. I learned the history of the framework and its repeatable design, the roles of the "Product Owner," "Scrum Master," and "Development Team," and the elements and ceremonies including the "product backlog," "sprint backlog," "sprint," "definition of done," "sprint planning," "daily Scrum," "sprint review" and "sprint retrospective."

Digging up the Details

While Scrum is simple in design, the methodology features many nuances that are difficult to communicate via traditional "textbook" methods. Therefore, I reached out to an industry professional versed in Scrum to get a grasp on the methodology's heavy soft-skill orientation.

Visualizing Scrum

During my role as the Scrum Master, I used two project management software, "Trello" and "Jira" to better understand the visualization of Agile team organization. Seeing the same project organized within two different project management tools allowed me to identify the strengths of each tool and the various ways Scrum can be designed.

THE TAKEAWAYS

Simplicity in Scrum

I discovered how Scrum is actually purposefully quite simple and easy to understand in its framework design to streamline effective communication and project development.

Solid Soft Skills

I discovered how the efficiency and success of Scrum heavily relies on the communication and collaboration skills of the roles operating within the framework. Clarity is key.

Framework Flexibility

I learned how Scum is not an all-or-nothing methodology; the framework can be adapted to various project needs, and the elements of Scrum can work on their own and be used in other forms of project development.
